How about some Miles news??? First of all, he's now 12 weeks old. Second, he's rolling around like crazy!!! Here's a quick video of him rolling onto his stomach on Saturday. It took a couple tries, but he got it. Another quick reminder, click the Full Screen button in the lower right corner of the video to enlarge.
What else is new? We're pretty sure he's laughing now. This morning he was really laughing it up. By the time we got the video going, things apparently weren't quite as funny, but there's still a hint of laughter in this video.
His coordination and strength keep getting better day after day. He gets less frustrated with tummy time (or will at least lie on his tummy for a little longer now) and will smile at just about anything!
And while "The Scowl" still exists.....
...life with Miles seems to be getting a little easier and more fun. Going to the store was an afterthought several weeks ago, but now getting out of the house isn't such a burden.

We have some new photos for everyone!
Miles is getting huge. We haven't weighed him in a few days, but when we put him on the scale last week, he was up to 13.2 pounds!!!!
He's been entertaining himself more the past couple weeks. We can put him in his bouncy seat and he'll look and play with the hanging toys for longer periods of time now. It makes preparing and eating meals a little easier now. While he's not always in the mood to sit and bounce, he definitely tolerates it more.
Miles is getting a little stronger and more coordinated now as well. He's held his head up fairly well since he was born, but he's continually able to hold his head up for longer periods of time (without looking obviously tired or getting cranky) and with less wobble. He's been working his abs, too - doing crunches and leg lifts in his bouncy seat or while sitting in the Boppy pillow. And while tummy time used to be instant cranky time, it's now fun and a new way to look at toys.
Mornings continue to be one of Miles best periods. He's always happy and smiley in the morning!
Last night, Melanie had a faculty-student gathering, so we dudes had a little Guys-Night-In with some football, more tummy time, and other baby entertainment.
He's gettin' big.... already growing out of some clothes. His original cloth diapers are getting a little bit snug - almost time to move up to some "one size fits all." And for the most part, he's getting a little happier each day!

Welcome back to Miles' blog. He's been a busy guy lately, travelling across the country on planes, trains, and boats. Last weekend we went to New Hampshire for a wedding and took a day trip to Boston.
We flew out Thursday evening and arrived in Manchester, NH in the wee hours of Friday morning. We got several worried looks as we stepped onto the plane, but Miles proved everyone wrong and (despite the six or so diaper changes, two before we even took off) he barely made a peep. Mom and Dad, on the other hand, proved they need help when it comes to air travel....
We got stuck in traffic on the way to the airport and after parking the car and taking the shuttle to the airport, we finally arrived with about 30 minutes until our flight took off. Naturally, we then found out from the Delta check-in kiosk that we were too late to check in..... Ugh. Luckily, the desk agents allowed us to check in and informed the gate agents that we were on our way. Unfortunately, Delta could not guarantee that our checked baggage would arrived in Manchester.... Guess that's the price we pay for getting to the airport so late. We rushed to the TSA line, which thankfully didn't take too long, then raced to our gate. We had made it in time.... whew.... Next stop - La Guardia, for our connection to Manchester.
We landed in New York and walked around to find a quick dinner before our next flight boarded at 10:35. With Melanie's/Miles' food restrictions, a suitable dinner was hard to find.... Plus, most of the restaurants had already closed for the night. We finally found a sit-down place not far from our gate that had burgers and decided we had time to wait. We ordered, took some bathroom breaks, and changed Miles. Then, just as our food arrived, we heard an announcement on the airport intercom that the flight to Manchester would be leaving momentarily and all passengers should be boarded. Strike two for Melanie and Tim. We looked at our boarding passes and realized that the flight didn't board at 10:35 - it took off at 10:35. So, we each scarfed down half a burger, paid our tab, and ran to the gate. We got on the plane as they closed the door behind us. Oops! Despite the drama, Miles slept the entire flight from New York to Manchester, and when we arrived at the Manchester airport, what was waiting for us at the baggage claim???? Our luggage!!!!! Whoo hoo! We grabbed our bags, picked up our rental car, and checked in to the hotel. Time for a few hours of sleep - big day in Boston tomorrow!
Friday morning we slowly got around.... Picked up some continental breakfast at the hotel, cleaned ourselves up, and out the door a little before noon. We made it to Boston just after lunchtime and walked over to the Quincy Market downtown for some grub (authentic Boston burritos!). Miles decided it was time for lunch as well, and thus began the "Breast-Feeding Tour of Boston." After eating, we hopped on the Old Town Trolley and took a tour of the city (Miles slept through most of it).
It was a fun ride with a lot of great sights along the way - the Paul Revere house, USS Constitution, Bunker Hill Monument, Cheers, the historic Back Bay neighborhood, Boston Commons, Fenway, MIT, and the Boston Tea Party ships (to name a few). After a two hour trolley tour, Miles was ready for another diaper change and something to eat. We walked over to the Boston Harbor wharf for stop #2 along the "Breast-Feeding Tour of Boston."
By now it was 4:30 in the afternoon, so we caught the last departure of the Boston Harbor cruise - definitely a highlight with more great views of the city.
We were pretty tired after the harbor cruise, but we couldn't pass up a chance for a baseball game at Fenway Park. Plus, the Royals were in town!!! We took the T (Boston's light rail) over to the Fenway neighborhood and stopped to get some dinner. While a local seafood joint or little Italian place would have been great, we instead opted for Chipotle. Considering there isn't a single Chipotle in Mississippi, it wasn't a difficult decision.
The game was lots of fun and a great way to cap off the day. The Royals lost, but we still got to enjoy a game at historic Fenway and introduce Miles to his first ever baseball game!!
Saturday, we took a trip out to the New Hampshire Sea Coast. We drove east to Hampton Beach, NH, then ventured south along Highway 1A to Salisbury, MA, where we stopped and had a little seaside lunch.
Heading back north to Hampton Beach, we saw one of the coolest things ever....
Miles was pretty tuckered out from his beach excursion.
Finally, we had a wedding to attend. The wedding was at a small winery in Sandown, NH. We got to see some old friends and had a great time - Congratulations Sue and Eric! Here we are with Sue, as well as our friends Douglas and Kelly (and Lucas).
After a whirlwind weekend, it was finally time to come home. Once again, Miles handled the return flights like a champ. Now 10 weeks old, he's becoming more and more fun and more acclimated to "the outside world" everyday. Now, if we could just get him to sleep a little more at night....

As I mentioned last time, Miles has a new fascination with the kitchen light fixture. Maybe his vision has improved to the point where he can see it more clearly.... In any case here are several more videos (with an emphasis on the kitchen light).
First up, you guessed it - a kitchen light video. This one is especially entertaining due to the head wiggle at 35 seconds (as mentioned previously, click the button in the lower right of the video player to view in full screen).
Next, a couple videos of Miles playing in his room. In the first, he admires the music playing from his activity mat and in the second, he stares at Mommy.
A couple more videos staring at the kitchen light. The first one has a pretty nice smile near the end. The second one was from this morning and he was in a great mood. He finally located the camera and the camera man....

Miles has been having some longer alert/happy periods lately. A couple mornings ago, we were able to put him in his bouncy seat without the pacifier or constant attention... all thanks to the kitchen light fixture. It's a hanging light, so we swing it and he watches it move back and forth. I'm not sure what's so exciting, but he's absolutely enamored with it! (I recommend clicking the "Full Screen" button in the bottom right corner of the video.)
As I mentioned in our last blog post, he's suddenly discovered his voice and how to use it. He was in a pretty good mood at lunch time, so we sat him in his Bumbo seat (and he didn't cry this time - already a success!) and he started cooing like crazy!!! We got a few good seconds of the happy, little guy showing off his new sitting and talking skills....
(According to the internet) since babies are now supposed to sleep on their backs, they don't start lifting their heads up as quickly as in the past. This makes tummy time extra important for developing those neck muscles. Here's Miles flexing.
All the excitement from light fixtures, Bumbo sitting, and tummy time can really wear a guy out. What better time to take a big 'ol nap than at Walmart? And after that nap, happy again.

Miles is seven weeks old now!!! What's been going on recently?
Last weekend we took Miles on his first interstate trip and first visit to the big city - New Orleans!!! Time for some crawfish etouffee, red beans and rice, and Saints football!!! Miles decided to show off his Mizzou football spirit.
The little day trip went well. He slept most of the way to and from New Orleans. We stopped at the mall in Metairie for some authentic New Orleans Subway sandwiches and then walked around while Melanie shopped. We quickly learned that Miles likes to keep moving in his stroller - stopping makes him grumpy. After the mall we went down to the Garden District and visited some local stores. I won a free bumGenius cloth diaper at ZukaBaby by participating in the The Can Challenge. Miles was pretty tuckered out from the trip.
Miles has been "aahing" and "oohing" now. When he's in a good mood, you can have a nice little conversation with him. He had a little something to say the other day on his activity mat.
On Wednesday, Miles had an appointment with the pediatrician. The kid is growin' like a weed!!! 10 pounds, 11 ounces!!! It was also time for (queue somber music)... his shots - three to be exact. He was pretty upset for about 20 seconds, but he quieted down soon after. He had some fussy moments later that day, but was in a great mood before heading out to Target that night (must take after his mom)!
He's beginning to bring his hand to his mouth to suck more and more. He hasn't quite figured out what to do once he gets his hand up there - does some licking and poorly-sealed sucking, but he's on the right track and it keeps him soothed (although it's a little noisy at night).
Lastly, the smiling continues!!! He definitely has his fussy moments (it's not all smiles and happy photos around here), but we'll forgive him to see that little smile!!
